WHY Waiting Dog
From
a dog owner’s perspective we wanted to recognize the special bond and
outright inter-dependency humankind experiences with their dog.
Dogs, we suspect would want to recognize, probably in a very selfless
manner, the very special bond they experience with their chosen
companions and leader.
It
is amazing to us that dogs, as a species and as individuals, would give
up control over their own destiny, replace the canine pack with their
“human pack”, and pledge themselves utterly to the well being of this
new multiple species pack. They become willing to hunt for us,
participate in all our daily activities, and protect, nurture
and, if required, die for this new pack. Our dens, daily
activities, and social life are understandable and similar to their
own. The dog even gives up its ability to reproduce, in deference
to the alpha dog couple, helping to raise their young. This has
also been documented as a trait of wolves in the wild.
Dogs
have honored humans in this way for millennia, but why has it taken
this long for humans to recognize and honor dogs as contributing
members (not only of the household, farm, ranch, and hunt) of society
at large? Perhaps it is because we now have individually
recognized Search & Rescue and trained Police dogs that have been
spotlighted in the media, who are credited with saving many
lives.
Undoubtedly,
it is also because it is only in the last few decades that our advances
in veterinary science and nutritional care have enabled the dog’s
lifespan to increase to a significant portion of our own. As
recently as the 1960’s a dog’s lifespan was calculated to average only
a couple of years. Some would argue that it is only our current
societies’ affluence that allows us to dedicate a portion of our lives
to these dog beings that have dedicated so much to us.
However,
one can also argue that it is a societal evolution that now enables us
to honor the dog. It has taken many decades for us as a society
to delineate what humane values we should adhere to. This has
improved the lives of the vulnerable humans among us that have been
victims of exploitation in the past. Now, conclusive studies that
show links between violence in humans, and violence and inhumane
treatment of animals. To have a more civilized society, we need
to address the causes of violence to both. A civilized society
will show hallmarks of honor and respect for its smallest and weakest
members. Honoring our beloved dog friends will increase the
amount of care we can show for other members of our society, including
the children, the sick, the elderly or disabled.
We trust you'll enjoy the site, tell your friends and return often.
All the best,
